Internet Uptime/Availability Monitoring
Nerd Cafe
PRTG (Paessler Router Traffic Grapher) is a powerful network monitoring tool that helps IT administrators track network performance, uptime, and availability. In this tutorial, we will set up Internet Availability Monitoring using PRTG Network Monitor in a real-world scenario.
Step 1: Understanding the Scenario
You are an IT administrator, and your company relies heavily on a stable internet connection. To ensure continuous connectivity, you want to monitor internet availability and receive alerts if the connection goes down. You will use PRTG Network Monitor to check internet uptime and response times.
Step 2: Adding an Internet Availability Sensor
1. Add a Device (Your Router or Gateway)
Open PRTG Web Interface.
Navigate to Devices → Click "Add Device".

Set Device Name (e.g., "Internet Gateway").
Enter the IP Address of your network’s default gateway or an external test host like
8.8.8.8
(Google DNS).

Click Create.
2. Add a Ping Sensor
Click on your newly created Internet Gateway device.
Click Add Sensor → Search for "Ping".

Select Ping Sensor and add it.

Configure:
Set Ping Destination (e.g.,
8.8.8.8
).Set Ping Interval (e.g., every 10 seconds).
Click Create.

Step 3: Adding an HTTP Sensor (Optional)
If you want to check the availability of a website instead of just pinging an IP:
Click Add Sensor → Search for "HTTP".
Select HTTP Sensor.

Configure:
Enter URL (e.g.,
https://www.google.com
).Set the Timeout (e.g., 10 seconds).
Click Create.

Step 4: Monitoring and Analyzing Data
View the Live Graphs to check latency trends.

Review Historical Data to find patterns in internet outages.
Check the Sensor Logs for downtime reports.
